For the purpose of enlightening the general public on the nature, sources of exposure and health effects of asbestos minerals, a review of these subjects has been undertaken. The health risk associated with asbestos in Jamaica was probed through visits to industrial sites, the National Chest Hospital and Pathology Department of the University Hospital of the West Indies. This preliminary study reveals poor handling and disposal methods and procedures for asbestos-containing materials which culminate into a public health risk. Seven cases of asbestosis and mesothelioma have been found and some victims have a history of exposure to asbestos. Recommendations are made for identification of suitable sites and mechanisms for waste disposal, detailed research into Jamaica's asbestos problem, and close monitoring of the health of persons who risk occupational exposure to asbestos....
