Abstract
Focuses on the Islamic heritage of the Maroons by examining the political and social structures of Maroon communities from an Islamic perspective. Argues that the Islamic concept of freedom was the basis of the Maroon struggle against slavocracy and posits that marronage, as initiated by Spanish-born Islamic Maroons, was a form of jihad. Many African slaves who subsequently joined the Spanish Maroons also professed the Islamic faith as they came from West Africa and the sub-Saharan region.....
