Abstract
Argues that three factors, in particular, have shaped Jamaica's history: the long association with the Atlantic World, especially the three hundred years of British rule between 1655 and 1962; Jamaica's geopolitics; and the importation of African slaves into the Americas. Maintains that these factors largely determined the course of Jamaican history, though their manifestation in the historical process of change and continuity has varied at different periods in the country's history.....
