Abstract
Analyses the agricultural and food-producing sector of the anglophone Caribbean island economies set in an historical perspective. Attempts to understand what are the multiple reasons for the relative decline of this important sector and the failure of policy proposals for its resuscitation. Examines issues such as the legacy of the plantation economy which emphasizes luxury export over basic food production; the reliance on multinational donor funding for economic development and the resulting manipulation of agricultural projects for such agencies; the implications of trade agreements such as the GATT and NAFTA on Caribbean agriculture and development in the long term; the Windward Island Banana Industry and its future in the face of the European Union (EU) and competition from South America; and the liberalization of the market economy leading to more underdevelopment of the region and dependence on the international market system.....
