Abstract
Examines the factors that shaped colonial policy towards the production of cotton for export from Nigeria to the United Kingdom between 1939 and 1951 and the failure of the British colonial authorities to achieve their desired goals. Contends that during the period under review the cultivation of cotton for export passed through three distinct phases: policy of export maximization (1939-1941); suppression of the export of Nigerian cotton to the United Kingdom (1941-1944); and the restoration of export maximization (1944-1951).....
