Abstract
Vision screening is now a routine part of well-child visits in most developed countries because of the short- and long-term social and educational impact of visual disorders. There are no national vision screening programmes in Jamaica currently, but a recent survey indicated that approximately 10 per cent of pre-school children screened required further evaluation. The study also indicated that parental perception was inadequate to identify children who needed further evaluation, supporting the need for development of a national screening progrramme. Recommendations for the components of a national screening programme include public and parental education; screening evaluations at primary health care visits which coincide with routine well-child and immunisation visits and integrated educational programmes. Adequate tertiary diagnostic and therapeutic services must be developed along with screening programmes.....
