Abstract
This chapter is part of ongoing research into aspects of the 'cultural resurrection' of the Maya of Central America. The researchers argue that the assertion of 'Mayaness' by the Maya themselves and the growing levels of reproduction of material aspects of Maya culture in tourism areas linked to Mundo Maya are the result of the attempt by Mayan people to survive /adapt to the new global tourism market. It is also a means of empowerment for Mayan people and a means of reaffirming Mayan cultural identity. The researchers present evidence to support their arguments.
