Abstract
Tertiary phosphine ligands have played a ubiquitous role in transition metal catalysis. However, they have drawbacks and disadvantages in certain applications. Against this background researchers have been exploring N-heterocyclic carbene ligands as viable alternatives to tertiary phosphines. Our research involves the preparation and applications of azolium salts containing the planar chiral [2.2]paracyclophane framework. The preparation, resolution and characterization of these salts and their use for the preparation and catalytic applications of ruthenium, rhodium, palladium and copper compounds will be described. The isolation of the free carbene ligands and their use as metal free organocatalysts will also be discussed.....
