Abstract
Permanent chain transects have been established at 18 sites in diverse geographical settings around the Caribbean, according to the CARICOMP Level One protocol, at 10 3m depth, to assess benthic community composition. While sites were located away from obvious point sources of pollution, some are known to have changed significantly prior to initiation of the survey. In 1995, major space occupants were algae (13-94% cover, and hard corals (6-42%). Minor components were soft corals (0.2-26%) and sponges (0-10%). Diadema antillarum was present at three sites (Bahamas, Barbados, Belize) but absent from others. In 1993-95, relatively little change in community composition occured.....
