Re-reading the Black Jacobins: James, the dialectic and the revolutionary conjuncture

Suggests that while James' historical method adheres to a marxist perspective, the singular and powerful note of Toussaint L'Ouverture in the making of the Haitian revolution forces James to revise his approach and raises questions about the efficacy of marxism as a tool to understand history. Further suggests that a break with historical determinism in theory and practice is very closely related to any genuine assertion of democracy.....
