Microwave Oven Reaction Enhanced (MORE) chemistry used in the preparation of 2-pyridone

A domestic microwave oven has been used as a convenient laboratory tool for the rapid and improved sysnthesis of 2-pyridone from pyridine in the presence of potassium persulfate and divalent metal ions salts such as Cu(II) and Zn(II). Fluorescence spectroscopy was used as the preferred method of detection and quantification of pyridone produced. Extensive experimentation to optimise microwave heating conditions and reaction conditions were carried out. An average reaction time of the order of less than three minutes was found to afford the maximum conversion. This translates into considerable savings in reaction times since previous comparable methods required autoclaving at 300°C for 8 hours....
