Abstract
With the ever increasing cost of conventional energy, it is imperative that countries find effective ways of reducing the processing and manufacturing cost of goods, agricultural produce, and other materials. In Jamaica, our particular geographical situation has blessed us with abundant sunshine. It is therefore rational for Jamaica to pursue energy utilization policies that maximize the use of the sun, ocean thermal currents and wind energy, as well as local hydrodynamic energy resources. In a project recently undertaken in the Department of Physics at the university of the West Indies, a mixed mode direct solar crop dryer was built. The temperature inside the dryer was controlled by a fast adaptive temperature controller. Although the controller's concept was not novel, the implementation and usage of the controller was.
