Abstract
Compounds of natural origins have found extensive useage in the pharmaceutical industry. Indeed, in 1980, the market share prescription drugs which utilize ingredients extracted directly from plants was US$8 billion. By 1990, this 25% market share had risen to 40%. In the ongoing effort to isolate novel natural compounds from plants that are useful in 'traditional' medicine, attention was focussed on Fevillea cordifolia L. (Cucurbitaceeae). Six new cucurbitacins - triterpenoids possessing the cucurbitane skeleton - have been isolated so far from this medical plant.
