The efficiency of administration of postoperative anaglesia at the University Hospital of the West Indies

Over a three month period, the medical records of all patients in Wards 1,2,5, and 6 at the University Hospital of the West Indies who recieved a general anaesthetic were examined within 48 hours of their discharge from hospital. Necessary data were obtained from the patients' kardex, nurses' notes and by direct questioning of the patients. Information on bio-data, the date and time of operation, the dosing and scheduling of postoperative analgesic drugs and the information recorded on the drug kardex were collected on a data collection form designed for this purpose. The surgical services involved as well as the age and sex of each patient were recorded. Data on number of analgesic drugs and reasons for inadequate analgesia were recorded.....
