Thee4 allele of apolipoprotein in E (APOE) has been identified as a major risk factor in the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in Caucasian populations. Its status as a risk factor in poulations of African origin is less clear. In two prior reports from the Indianapolis-Ibadan study group, APOE e4 in double dose (but not in single dose) was a risk factor in the African Americans but not in the Yoruba.
