Abstract
Rats receiving 0.4-1.6% aqueous neem leaf extract orally for 10 weeks showed significant (p<0.05) increases in total red blood cell and white blood cell counts, packed cell volume, mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration, and an increasing trend in haemoglobin levels, and decreases (p<0.001) in serum levels of testosterone, potassium, total bilirubin and alkaline phosphatase. Intraperitoneal administration of steroidal neem leaf extract at a dose of 100 mg/kg body weight, twice a week for 10 weeks resulted in impaired spermatogenesis (increased the number of headless spermatozoa and significantly (p<0.01) decreased the motility of caudal spermatozoa, leading to a decline in the fertility index in the male rats. Intraperitoneal administration of steroidal neem leaf extract also significantly decreased the total spontaneous motor activity scores in rats receiving either 100 mg/kg body weight twice per week for 6 weeks (p<0.01) or a single dose (p<0.05). However, although oral administration of a 0.4% aqueous neem leaf extract for 188 days could not normalize the blood glucose levels in Streptozotocin induced diabetic rats, it resulted in gain in body weights and lessened the mortality rate in these rats. In conclusion, these findings confirm the Ayurvedic claims of neem being a 'blood purifier' and a possible sedative. Various other medicinal properties, including anti-fertility effects have been demonstrated, although the active ingredients and underlying mechanisms through which these medicinal properties are manifested are yet to be established.....
