Diabetes in the Caribbean

There will be a 51% increase in the prevalence of diabetes in the Caribbean in the 21st century, as a result of rapid cultural changes and consequent impact on diet and lifestyle that is further compounded by an aging population. In clinical management of diabetes insulin is underutilized. As a result, diabetic neuropathy has been reported in 85% of the cases while over a third of the hospital beds in the public health system are occupied by patients with diabetes related problems and they account for 80% of the cases on the surgical wards. Diabetes mellitus ranks as the leading cause of mortality. In management of the problem, life style, pharmacological aspects, tertiary support, complimentary medicine and support groups can have a positive impact.....
