Constituents and phytotoxic effects of Pinus caribea L. Sawdust Lignin

The present study was conducted in order to establish the chemical composition of Pinus caribea L. sawdust lignin and their phytotoxin effects against Raphanus sativus L. seeds. High performance liquid chromatographic analyses revealed the presence of vanillin and vanillic acid. Interpretation of the phytotoxicity data obtained in the present study revealed that the crude lignin extract was less phytotoxic than the individual compounds, except for vanillic acid. Thus, at 300 ug L-1 the order of inhibition in the elongation of Raphanus sativus L. (radish) radicle was: 3,5- dimethoxy-4-hydroxycinnamic acid = p-hydroxybenzaldehyde (100.0%) > syringaldehyde (80.6%) > crude oxidized lignin (66.7) > vanillin (46.9%) > crude lignin [unoxidized] (46.3) > vanillic acid (26.9%) > control (0.0%).....
