Persistence of vamidothion in coconuts at different stages of development

Vamidothion residues (0.01-1.3 ppm) were detected in the water of immature nuts and the jelly of maturing (8-10 month old) nuts within two days after injection of 100 cm3 of vamidothion E. C. into the stem of each coconut tree. Residues appeared very late in the water and hardening jelly of semi-mature (11-13 month old) nuts, but persisted at levels of 0.2-0.3 ppm for 109 days after the treatment. Residues were not detectable in the meat and water of mature nuts. Kinetics of the hydrolysis of vamidothion showed a two-stage process in both buffered solution and coconut water, the first stage showing first order behaviour with a rate constant of 2.19x10-7s-1 followed by a much slower second stage.....
