Abstract
Questions what kind of future Jamaican art has. Discusses some of the ways in which 'The National' has been reinterpreted by succeeding generations of Jamaican artists, primarily David Boxer and Petrona Morrison. In contrast, looks at a recent exhibition, 'Work in Progress', by Chris Cozier in Barbados. Argues that Jamaican art has to free itself from the formalist-modernist framework if it wants to participate in a discourse about the contemporary.
