Abstract
Beaconites is a trace fossil name that has been adopted indiscriminately for unlined, lined, unwalled, thinly walled and thickly walled meniscate backfilled boroughs. The confusion is further exacerbated by the inconsistent use of the terms 'wall' and 'lining'. The terminology adopted for this contribution is initially summarized. The diagnostic criteria of Beaconites are then re-examined, particularly regarding its distinction from the morphologically similar ichnotaxa Ancorichnus and Taenidium.
