Abstract
Explores the meaning and lived contradictions of fatherhood in the Caribbean context by raising three main issues: the consequences that two opposing forms of sexuality have on the establishment of paternity; the status of fatherhood within the complex pattern of varying family and household structures; and the pervasive 'trickster ethos' underlying the relationships between men and women and sexual reproduction. Outlines that fatherhood defines a relationship that is negotiated on the basis of the ontological principle of blood and that, within this relationship, women often hold the key to men's effectiveness as fathers.....
