Using police records as the primary data source, the paper looks at the impact of the radical changes in the social organization of crime from the mid-1970s. There was a shift away from property crimes to violent crimes and an increase in the level of organization, social embeddedness and power of Jamaican criminal networks. Concludes that crime is now less of a direct response to economic crisis and more the direct outcome of doing business in a large and growing underground economy....
