Describes two studies conducted in Jamaica. The first study was conducted in five primary schools in Kingston to identify the health and nutrition determinants of school failure. The second was conducted on the nutritional status and health behaviours of adolescent girls and how these affected school achievement and attendance. Anemia was consistently associated with poor school achievement in both studies. Hunger affected achievement among the primary school children and attendance among adolescents. Other determinants were economic status, excessive violence and in the case of adolescents their behaviour had a marked effect on schooling. Also in the case of adolescents early sexual behaviour, aggression and lack of participation in extra curricular activities were associated with poor performance.
