Abstract
Argues that following the rise of both socialism and neo-liberalism and apart from a few notable exceptions, the Caribbean region faces a far more bleak than optimistic future. Yet within this pessimistic situation sees some interesting new developments. For example the deepening of CARICOM and the widening of regionalism in the Association of Caribbean States suggests that there is an increasing recognition that countries of the region will either hang together or hang separately. At the popular level there is a restless mood that has within the possible engines of a new social and political renewal.
