Abstract
This paper investigates impact of economic development on energy consumption and the nature of the relationship between the two using cross-national data drawn from the Middle East. It also examines the implications of energy consumption for environmentally sustainable development. Empirical investigation reveals that economic development is the most important factor in the pattern of energy consumption among countries in the Middle East. Further analysis indicates a decoupling of the energy consumption economic development relationship. Furthermore, carbon dioxide and methane emissions are significantly associated with energy consumption. Finally, the implications of these emissions for environmentally sustainable development are discussed.....
