The impact of development, and coastal change on the flushing time of Kingston Harbour, Jamaica
Jamaican Journal of Science and Technology
Date of Publication
Kingston Harbour, Jamaica, has a history of eutrophication, due to nutrient loadings emanating from the city. In this study a two dimensional numerical hydrodynamic model of the Harbour is used to assess the impact of coastal development on the evolution of this eutrophication. The model shows that this development did not materially affect the flushing of the Harbour, and so the rapid increase in eutrophication around 1970 must be linked to concurrent population pressure. The model was also used to investigate the feasibility of aiding the flushing of the Harbour by adding a second entrance, showing that this is likely to have negligible impact on the present flushing time.....
