Abstract
This chapter disaggregates the impacts of devaluation on the Nigerian housing sector between 1986 and 1996, using the city of Ibadan as a case study. Specifically, it seeks to (1) assess the impact of devaluation on households and their accommodation focusing on the effect of devaluation on rental rates, the number of occupants per room, tenure, choice, quality and maintenance of units, and living condition; (2) analyze the effects of devaluation on the supply of housing, viewed from the perspective of builders, and examine new housing construction in light of the change in emphasis of government's housing policy during the period of study; (3) identify and account for variations in the price of building materials within the period of investigation, in light of broader market forces other than devaluation; (4) make recommendations for ameliorating some of the negative effects of devaluation on the housing sector.....
