The tropical western Atlantic Perophoridae (Ascidiacea): I. The genus Perophora

Describes five species in the genus Perophora, distinguished by morphology and habitat requirements, occurring in the tropical western Atlantic, . Refers to specific differences in stigmata and the arrangement of mantle muscles of P. viridis and P. regina, P. multiclathrata, P. bermudensis and P. carpenteria n. sp. that are considered to be of taxonomic importance. Reports P. bermudensis to be a valid species and not a synonym of P. multiclathrata. Concludes that, in the absence of a designated Type, an original specimen of P. bermudensis from the type locality is the Neotype; P. viridis is the most cosmopolitan of Caribbean species while P. regina and P. bermudensis are restricted to areas of fairly strong flowing currents in mangrove channels;, P. multiclathrata is characteristic of quiet sheltered environments while P. carpenteria flourishes in shallow water with moderately agitated water flow.....
