Abstract
Agriculture, especially if it is to meet the goal of being economically and environmentally sustainable, has to evolve into a complex business requiring the accumulation and integration of knowledge and information from many diverse sources. As a result, the modern farmer has to rely more and more on agricultural specialists to provide information for accurate decision-making. Unfortunately, this specialist assistance is not always available when the farmer needs it. Expert systems, computer programs which, within a limited domain, perform as well as human experts, offer one way to alleviate the problem of the non-availability of experts. This paper describes one such agricultural expert system, DIBAMOTEX. DIBAMOTEX is an expert system developed for the control of the diamondback moth, a pest/parasite prevalent in crucifer cops, particularly cabbage.
