Insecticidally active triterpene from Artocarpus altilis Park

Insecticidal activity directed isolation studies using adult Cylas formicarius (Summer) as the test organism revealed that one of the active compounds present in the non-polar extract of Artocarpus altilis Park leaves is a pentacyclic triterpene with unsaturation at the 12-13 position. The toxicity of the crude extract was reduced with each fractionation step. Thus, the order of the 48 hr LC50 (mg/g body wt.) doses for the crude ethanol extract and its hexane, methanol and ethyl acetate fractions and compounds was: 3.9 (crude extract) > 5.5 (hexane fraction) > 7.8 (methanol fraction)> 11.5 (triterpene). The ethyl acetate fraction was inactive i.e. > 10.0 mg/g dose inflicted only 20% mortality. The LC50 value derived for the triterpene when administered in 1.0% (v/v) dimethyl sulfoxide in acetone was 1.9 mg/g. This represents a 6-fold increase in the toxicity of the triterpene.....
