A logit analysis of problems affecting domestic food production in Guyana

Since the early 1960s domestic food production has declined significantly in Guyana, a country that accounts for up to 50% of arable land in the West Indies and where agriculture contributes approximately 27% to GDP compared to less than 6% for all of the major West Indian countries. While previous studies have provided important insights into the type of problems that contributed to the decline of domestic food production in Guyana, few have attempted to analyse the differential impacts that these problems have on the overall food producing capacity of the country. Thus although policy-makers become aware of the wide range of factors affecting domestic agriculture, they are not provided with reliable information which enables them to prioritise government investment directed at removing these constraints.
