Abstract
Diabetes is a complex disease leading to degeneration, disability, and death. Known as a controllable disease, appropriate measures can help patient to have an acceptable life. The population of diabetics is very high in the world (i.e. in North America nearly 1 out 20 citizens is diabetic). The rate is little higher in the Caribbean region. Diabetes is the leading cause of adult blindness and amputations; it doubles the chance of heart attack; and it increases the risk of kidney disease. Insulin injections, blood glucose levels, planning food intake must be closely monitored. We have analysed and designed an Information Appliance to monitor diabetic patients (IADP:Information Appliance for Diabetic Patients). This device is aimed at improving the health of diabetics by helping them become more directly involved in their own health care and also allowing doctors to monitor their diabetic patients. This paper discusses the design, features and functions of the IADP and identifies some of the various parameters that can be measured directly by IADP through external devices or entered by the patient.
