Abstract
Explores the changes in gender identities and representations, and their ideological effects by visiting three historical sites where gender discourse seems to have been particularly effective in determining social relations and popular perceptions of identity. Examines the gender order of West Africa in the period when enslaved Africans were forcibly removed to the Americas. Looks at the effects on work and reproduction of the ideological constitution of gender indentities within the Caribbean plantation context.
