Abstract
Suggests that media production is complex and that there are many influences affecting content selection and creation. In the daily routine of media work, gender may play an influencing role in story and source selection. Persons concerned with the portrayal of gender through the mass media, often reflecting an absence or marginalization of media images and stereotyping gender relations, have sought to change the quality of this portrayal through developing 'gender policies', often assuming these policies are a sufficient condition for improvement. The paper defends the point of view than any intention to influence the quality of media production needs to take into account the constraints under which media content is analysed, the levels at which this production takes place, the actors involved and the different interests at stake.....
