Abstract
Traces the role of orature in the emergence of national languages and national identities associated with these. Argues that before the widespread use of writing and print, the development and consolidation of national identities took place through works of orature. Suggests that in the case of Jamaica and its emerging national language, modern electronic technologies have done for speech what print has done for writing. Uses dancehall and the deejay to show the re-emergence of orature as a means of projecting the national language and the national identity.....
