Abstract
Discusses the promotion of a stance within language teaching known technically as metalinguistic awareness but more generally as language awareness. The aim is to make language visible for play and investigation, and to develop in learners the ability to talk about such language behaviour. A strong content area would be the dynamic language environment of the region. Ideas for a programme of language study and the findings of one local study, based on the notion of metalinguistic awareness, are also presented.....
