Abstract
Tracing Guyana's political and social history, argues that the country's economic, social and political problems have had a marked effect on its education system at all levels. Argues that educational reforms in the system since independence have essentially been those introduced by the People's National Congress (PNC). These reforms have been underpinned not only by the socialist ideology of this government but also by attempts to develop and nurture certain values that became necessary as a result of historical experiences. These had to do in particular with a striving to break economically, socially and intellectually with the country's former colonial master; the need for racial harmony and the necessity to harness and exploit the vast natural resources of the country for the people's benefit.....
