Abstract
Analyses 'dance hall' as a speech event, then focuses on the controversy surrounding Buju Banton's record 'Boom Bye Bye' making several points about the Jamaican language and culture. The article is written in Jamaican with an English translation and there is a brief discussion of the process by which a sociolinguistic academic article was conceived of and written in Jamaican, traditionally a language of oral informal discourse.....
