Abstract
Problematises property-ownership in colonial Jamaica where the sugar planters were not the only property-holders. Argues that, encouraged by local geographical and economic factors, space was created for the co-existence of sugar and non-sugar proprietors; Jamaica was involved in a complicated trading network in which England was only one participant. Contrasts the status of sugar and non-sugar producers in Jamaican society in the eighteenth and nineteenth centurines, demonstrating the ways in which the existence of proprietors, not directly involved in the sugar industry, complicated the social hierarchy and the distribution of enslaved and free labourers in colonial Jamaica.....
