An assessment of seventh and eighth graders' ability to comprehend a science textbook written at fifth graders' level

This study assessed the extent to which 300 Jamaican 7th and 8th graders (aged 11-14 years) could read and comprehend selected passages in a science textbook written at Grade 5 level by Jamaican teachers for 7th graders in all-age schools who are reading below their grade level. The sample comprised 166 7th graders, and 134 8th graders radomly selected from two all-age, two comprehensive and two traditional high schools in rural and urban Jamaica. Fry's readability graph, Cloze, cartoon, comprehension tests, technical and non-technical vocabulary tests were used for data collection. Results indicated that although the Fry's test suggested that the test had a reading level of Grade 5 and a reading age of 10 years, as its authors claim, only between 10-14% of the subjects could comprehend the text at the independent level. Subjects from professional parents/guardians, traditional high and Non-ROSE schools significantly outperformed their peers from nonprofessionals, all-age, comprehensive and ROSE schools respectively.....
