Abstract
Critically examines the extent to which government's land lease policy advanced the numerical growth and spatial expansion of the peasantry by quantitatively analyzing the trends and pattern of government leasing during the period 1866-1900. Primary data was derived from statistics on land transactions taken from the Land Conveyance Deeds registered at the Island Record Office and Government land distribution statistics appended to the reports of the Surveyor General of Jamaica over the period under review.
