Abstract
Examines the technological capacity of the Jamaican slave system through an analysis of technical changes or innovations in the cane sugar mill over the period 1760-1830. Argues that, contrary to the traditional belief of Marxists and some economic historians, the slave system did show a degree of willingness to adopt and adapt new technology to improve efficiency and ensure greater reliability. Maintains that technicians from the enslaved population were closely involved in some of the inventions.....
