Abstract
Looks at African slavery as part of the Atlantic World continuum, tapping an underutilised source, the Church Missionary Society (CMS) documents, to provide new data on domestic slavery in New Calabar. Stresses the heterogeneous and fluid nature of domestic slavery while, at the same time, critiques the traditional interpretation of such forms of slavery as 'mild'. Engages with the still topical issue of domestic slavery in Africa and the links between the Caribbean and Africa, specifically how forms of slavery in Africa affected the evolution of slavery in the Americas.....
