Describes the clash between the British government and the Jamaican administration over banking policy. The latter resented the privileged position of the commercial banks which held note-issuing rights in the region. The Colonial Office exhibited a general reluctance to interfere with these rights. Because of this reluctance, the Jamaican legislature, without soliciting advice from the Colonial Office, took steps to promote the government note issue of that colony at the expense of the banknotes.....
