Abstract
The Hellshire coastline consists of many irregularities that in some instances manifest themselves in the form of well-defined embayments. Previous observations revealed that the phytoplankton distribution along the coastline was atypical of expected. It was postulated that circulation vectors may be responsible for this observed pattern, as physicochemical parameters could not account for the observed trends. To investigate the influence of circulation pattern on the distribution of phytoplankton along the coast line sampling occasions coincided with the full and new moons when the tides would be at their greatest and lowest accordingly. During this time there were approximately eight sampling occasions from which approximately 150 water samples were obtained. In addition physicochemical data as well as current vectors were obtained. Parameters examined over the experimental duration as well as the overall changes in their concentrations as a consequence. From these data, it was concluded that the sediments would be a source of nutrients to the overlaying waters following remediation. However due to rapid exhaustion of nutrients from the interstitial waters the period of time that release was sustained in the system was relatively short. This resulted in a decrease in the influences of the sediment on the overlying water pollutant status over the duration of the experiment. Extrapolating this observation to Hunts Bay and Kingston Harbour it is being suggested that given cleaner inflows of water to the area, the sediment should clean itself over time without the need for physical engineering intervention.....
