Abstract
This study investigates selected factors affecting the lower Rio Minho. Factors include anthropogenic disturbances and the impacts of drought and seasonal flow. Sampling was carried out over a period of 15 months. A survey of the benthic macroinvertebrate population was conducted via qualitative (net pulls using a standard pond net) and quantitative methods (kick sampling using a standard pond net). Physico-chemical parameters were measured. Significant relationships (Fs > 5) were established between species-richness on the whole, the abundance of specific taxa (e.g. Thiara sp; Baetidae sp; Trichopterans) and rainfall and other physio-chemical parameters such as conductivity. Relationships were also established influences such as sand mining and seasonal scouring and the abundance and distribution of taxa(namely Thiara sp. Trichopterans).....
