Abstract
'The struggle for subsistence conducted by workers with free legal status [in St. Kitts-Nevis] is investigated [in this article]. [It] confirms the importance to the ex-slaves as free persons of the customary right to labour bargaining procedures established under slavery and demonstrates their limited utility in economic circumstances which exposed them to the fluctuations of international trade and the new instruments of coercion perfected by employers and the colonial states.'....
