Abstract
The title dimer complex in aqueous solution undergoes a rapid one electron transfer reaction with hexacyanoferrate (II) ions followed by a much slower process which involves the decomposition of the dimer complex to form a monomeric iron (II) species. The monomeric iron (II) species then undergoes a slow complex reaction to produce a blue complex, very similar in nature to Prussian blue. It is proposed that the mechanism of the first electron transfer process is outer sphere and the subsequent process involves both adduct formation followed by electron transfer. The rate of the electron transfer depends on the concentration of alkali metal cations in solution, revealing the possibility of the formation of an ion-triplet before electron transfer.
