Abstract
Objective: To obsever the cytotoxic effect of the plant extract PDA316 on yeast (saccharomyces cerevisiae) and correltae any inhibition of cell growth with possible antitumor effect son spontaneous mammary tumors in Sprague Dawkey rats. Methods: Yeast cells were cultured in liquid medium in the presence of an aqueous plant extract PDA316 (100mg/ml). The cell density was measured densitometrically after 24 hours. Zone of inhibition studies were also done by testing the effects of log concettrations of PDA316 (0.01mg/ml-100mg/ml) for its activity against the growth of yeast. For preliminary cancer investigations, rats with =sponatneous mammary tumors were chosen randomly from a colony of Sprague-Dawley rats at the Preclinical Animal House of the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus. Rats treated with the extract received received a dose of 35.7 mg/kg via the intra-peritoneal route and the control group rats received sterile water over a six week period. Tumor size was measured using a calliper and body weight recorded weekly. Tumors were resected for histopathology studies. Conclusion: The plant extract PDA316 exhibited an antifungal effect on the yeast cells. Preliminary results in the animal studies indicate a potential antineoplastic property of the plant extract pending further investigation.....
